Investment is flooding into tours and activities. You only have to consider the recent $484-million investment into Berlin start-up GetYourGuide. But then look at Google to understand that this is also a tough area to crack. The search giant recently rolled back its Touring Bird experiment into its core travel group, and what happens next remains to be seen.

All is not quiet on the hotel distribution front. Yes Amoma, one of the biggest culprits in undercutting hotel rates, may be out of the picture. And yes, the recent Marriott-Expedia tie up is being viewed as a groundbreaking move to redefine the wholesale redistribution model. Yet the cost of distribution continues to rise and the relationship between hotels and the platforms that distribute their inventory remains unbalanced.

Steven Domin, the CEO and founder of Duffel, stumbled into creating what the press release proclaims is “the biggest shakeup of the travel sector since the launch of budget air travel” sort of by accident. He was trying build something “fairly unambitious” – a weekend getaway website that involved some element of machine learning to determine preferences of past trips, and included flight and hotels.

“I thought this would be the hardest part,” he says. But he quickly discovered that the worst bit was getting access to the reservation systems for searching flights and hotels.

Managing revenues in the car rental business is a complex and challenging business. In 2018, however, Sixt saw revenues rise by 12.6%. That was down to strong growth in Germany and abroad. A key driver of this were foreign operations where revenues jumped by 22.8% in the vehicle rental business, says Henrik Imhof, Senior Vice President Yield Management and Pricing, Sixt who will be speaking at the EyeforTravel Revenue and Optimisation Growth Summit (Nov 26-27).

Walk around any major city at night and chances are you might notice newly built swanky apartment blocks standing gloomily in the darkness. Designed for generation rent, multi-family apartments are sold as an affordable form of housing where multiple units are contained in one or several buildings within a complex. However, while demand for these properties continues to grow, it can take anywhere from a year to 18 months to fill the units, and this isn’t great news for the property developers.

Liberalisation of the European rail market has not exactly happened at high speed!  At the Amadeus Rail Innovation Forum last week (Oct 9-10), Matthias Blume, Senior Manager International Distribution at Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), said that like most brick and mortar companies railways have not been the most agile, but until now there had been little impetus to change.
